Who can be an understudy for dance competitions?

28th February

The dance studio i use to work and dance at closed and a new one opened up. The owner of the studio is either 20 or 21 but looks younger. She has a competition team that she teaches and she is acting as understudy. i thought that was illegal at most if not all dance competitions. Does anyone know if I’m right, or more specific rules or would each competition have its own rule for that?
In most rules i thought it was about being a professional not just the age. any one with better knowledge then me?

i don’t think it really matters unless there’s an age limit.
if it’s like a category for 12-17 year old’s or something like that, then i think it would be illegal.
if it’s not, she should be fine.
remember that they’re looking at the group as a whole, not just at one person.

hope i helped! :D

What Are The Highland Games

27th February

Highland games, a symbol of Scottish culture and representation, are festivals that are conducted throughout the year in Scotland as well as in other parts of the world, where Scots, by lineage or birth, have settled. The athletic events that form the focal point of the games were actually developed to test the performers’ accuracy, agility, stamina, and strength.

The Highland games have their origin in the 11th century when Scotland’s King Malcolm III urged contestants to participate in a foot race, in order to recruit the most perfect men at arms for his army. Initially, the games were held at the summit of Craig Choinnich.

The first modern Highland games were conducted at Lord Gwydir’s Perthshire Estate, in Scotland, in 1819. The prime competitions held during this time were athletics, piping, and dancing, and prizes were given to the best performers in such events as Highland reels and the ancient Scotch sword dance and piping.

Later, it became even more popular when Queen Victoria developed a special interest for Scotland, its people and its culture. As a result, highland games became one of the favorite pastimes for the Queen. From 1849, she allowed these games to be conducted at Braemer Castle, where they are conducted to this day.

It is now estimated that every year more than 500 Highland games are conducted around the world, and of those 500, more that 175 are held in the United States. The largest as well as the most spectacular Highland games in the world is the Cowal Highland Gathering, also known as the Cowal Games. Conducted in Dunoon, Scotland, every August. The Cowal games draw more than 3,500 competitors and around 10,000 spectators from across the world.

Another popular set of Highland games is the Clanloddoch Games and Gathering, which is held in Strathdon, in August as well. Also of special significance are Highland games conducted in Inverness every summer, attracting a large number of Scottish highlanders as well as tourists. A few among the highland games held in the US are the Capital District Scottish games conducted annually in Almont, New York; Seaside Highland games conducted in California; and Grandfather Mountain Highland Games conducted in North Carolina.

The prime attraction of the Highland games is the Scottish highlanders, which are considered the descendants of several Celtic tribes, such as the Scotti, the Picts, and Gaels. They celebrate their heritage by wearing kilts and other traditional clothes. Among the athletic competitions are the caber, throwing of the hammer, the shot putt, tug-of-war, weight throw and sheaf toss. Today mainly high school and college track and field athletes participate in these events.

Perhaps one of the most memorable events in the Highland games are a series of events related to music, of which most noteworthy is bagpipe music. Equally important is different types of drumming and piping competitions. Harp circles, fiddling, and the Celtic bands also form highlights of musical events.

The more prominent of the dance events are traditional dances such as Scottish country dancing and highland dancing. Scottish country dancing takes after ballroom dancing. While on the other hand, Highland dancing is a technical form of dance, and is mostly performed solo. Highland dancing is held in accordance with standardized steps and rules put forward by the Scottish Official Board of Highland Dancing (SOBHD) and is classified into traditional dances and national dances. Some of the traditional dances are the Seann Triubhas, Sword Dance, and the Highland Reel. The Flora MacDonald, Blue Bonnets, and Scottish Lilt are among the national dances.

Apart from these events, a variety of other events and activities are also now included, like traditional feats of Armories, herding dog trials, and the showcasing of several modern as well as traditional Celtic arts. One can also purchase a range of traditional Scottish items during this event.

The Highland games entertain both men and women, young and old. Furthermore, they are an excellent way to explore and learn about the Scottish culture and heritage.

Women Bodybuilding: Then and Now

27th February

Everyone has either heard of or is familiar with the sport of competitive bodybuilding. The female component, which is known as women bodybuilding, began in the late 1970s as women began to participate in competitions. Now, more than three decades later, women bodybuilding is a large part of the sport and has begun to garner the respect that it has strived for since it’s inception.

Although physique contests for women can actually be documented in the 1960s, they were little more than bikini contests. The first true women bodybuilding competition is regarded as the one held in Canton, Ohio in 1978. Promoted by Henry McGhee, the first United States Women’s National Physique Championship was the first competition where the entrants were judged solely on their muscularity as opposed to how well they looked in swimsuits.

By 1979, more women bodybuilding competitions were being held. The sport, however, did not possess a sanctioning body until 1980. Known as the National Physique Committee, this organization hosted the first women’s nationals and became the top amateur level competition for women bodybuilding in the United States. Additionally, 1980 marked the first Ms. Olympia competition, which is the most honored competition for women bodybuilding professionals.

As the sport continued to grow and increase in overall popularity, competitors found themselves needing to train harder and improve their overall muscular physique. By the 1980s, women bodybuilding was no longer a bikini contest or seeing who could pose in the highest heels. Now, it was becoming a popular sport with championship titles and increasing fan attendance.

With films that have been produced in honor of women bodybuilding competitions, coverage on major television networks and despite some controversies along the way, women bodybuilding has more than proven it’s ability to remain in the ranks of this popular sport. As further proof, the IFBB established a Hall of Fame in 1999, which would honor bodybuilding’s top athletes. To date, 14 women bodybuilding competitors have been inducted. Among them, Carla Dunlap, Cory Everson and Rachel McLish, Bev Francis, Lisa Lyon and Abbye Stockton, Kay Baxter, Diana Dennis, Kike Elomaa, Laura Combes, Lynn Conkwright, Ellen Van Maris, Stacy Bentley and Claudia Wilbourn.

In late 2004, the IFBB introduced a new rule that required women bodybuilding participants decrease their amount of muscularity by 20%, which is now referred to simply as the ‘20% rule.’ The rule applies to those whose physique requires the decrease. In 2005, another rule was introduced that would abolish the weight class system beginning with the 2005 Ms. Olympia.

In addition to women bodybuilding, there are two additional categories that are closely related and often held as part of the same event. The fitness competition includes a swimsuit round, along with a round that has the entrants judged on their performance in aerobics, dance or gymnastics. The second category is a figure competition, which is a newer format, and has the participants being judged exclusively on their symmetry and muscle tone. This category focuses less on muscle size than does women bodybuilding.

Although women bodybuilding has continued to grow in popularity, the prize money remains significantly less than is awarded to male bodybuilders.
